Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Jammu & Kashmir

A 6 day “Workshop on Hands-on Training in Bioinformatics” for the students of B. Tech. (IBT), M. Sc. (Biotechnology) and Ph. D. (Biotechnology) in School of Biotechnology is being conducted from August 30 2011 to 4th September 2011 in collaboration with BCS- in silico Biology (BCS-ISB), a bioinformatics consultancy company in Lucknow. The concern focuses on various aspects of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics to build solutions to complex biological and data analysis problems faced by scientists, biotechnology companies and colleges. They provide Bioinformatics education and training to Post Graduate and Under Graduate students in the fields of database development, computational bioinformatics, Proteomics and Comparative Genomics through the state of art technology laboratories so as to prepare them to meet the future challenges. The workshop is planned such that the students gain hands-on experience in various Bioinformatic tools from the expert Lectures and Practical sessions to be conducted by Mr. Ankur Mohan (Director), Ms. Pallavi Gangwar (Project Manager) and Mr. Avinash Gupta (Faculty and BDE)

The inaugural Session of the Workshop was held on 30th August, 2011 at School of Biotechnology which was attended by Deans and Directors of various Schools, Faculty members, Staff members, Research scholars and UG & PG students. Prof. V. Verma presented the Inaugural Address of the Workshop highlighting the vast scope of Bioinformatics in modern research. Coordinator of the Workshop is Dr. Sharada Potukuchi, Asst. Prof., School of Biotechnology presented the Introductory remarks of the Workshop. Mr. B.K. Bhatia, Training & Placement Officer, SMVDU interacted with the mentors from BCS-InSilico Biology (BCS-ISB) Lucknow. Dr. Samantha Vaishnavi, Lecturer SBT and Cocordinator of the Workshop presented the Vote of thanks on the occasion. The support of Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU and financial assistance from the DBT funded BIF project is gratefully acknowledged for the conduct of the Workshop.
